If you have always been good at maths, you might be thinking of pursuing a career in finance and accounting. When you choose to become an accountant, you will come across some terms like CFA and CPA.

There are prestigious titles in the world of accounting, but to earn these titles, you will have to follow different routes. The job responsibilities are also different. Understanding these differences early on will help you select the right career for yourself. So let’s analyze the key differences between CFA and CPA credentials.

    • 3. Work with Different Clients
    • 4. Have different career goals

    1. Cover different skills

If you compare CFA vs CPA, you will notice both have very different kinds of skills. A CPA learns about accounting rules, tax laws, and financial reporting. A CFA spends more time learning about investment stocks, bonds, and how markets work and fluctuate, and what factors play a role in these changes.

So, if you look closely at the subjects and skill sets required to pass the CFA and CPA exams, you will understand that they are very different from each other. These skills equip CPA and CFA for different job roles.

    2. Focus On Different Careers

Whether you should consider becoming a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) depends on your interests. Once you choose to earn these titles, you will have to follow a specific career path in accounting.

If you are mainly interested in handling the accounting, auditing, and taxation department for any business, you should consider becoming a CPA. On the other hand, if your interest leans towards investment management and forward-looking financial analysis, then you should become a CFA. If you are confused about your own interest, you should do a basic accounting course at Intuit. This course will provide you with the foundation to choose the right path in your accounting career.

    3. Work with Different Clients

After passing the exams and earning the title, CFAs and CPAs work with different kinds of clients. Their daily responsibilities also differ. A CPA  prepares tax returns, reviews financial records, and helps with audits.

A CFA works with clients who are interested in investments. So what they do daily is study market trends, research investments, and figure out which investment opportunities businesses should consider and which to decline. Both CFA and CPA work in the domain of accounting, but they do so in very different ways.

    4. Have different career goals

As people gain experience, they choose careers that match their evolving experience and skill set. A CPA can become a tax expert, an auditor, and an accounting manager in a big firm. On the other hand, a CFA can become an investment analyst, portfolio manager, and financial advisor. The credentials you choose will set your whole career trajectory, so make the decision thoughtfully.

Both CFA and CPA credentials can lead to rewarding careers, but there are many differences between them. Their skill sets, the work they do, the clients they work with, and career goals vary widely. Whether you should become a CPA or CFA depends on your interests. Once you understand the differences and choose your career carefully, your chances of success increase significantly.
